Dental Insurance

Approximately 55% of Americans have dental insurance, mostly through an employer-sponsored plan. For
a small business owner or self-employed person, dental insurance is expensive and limited in coverage.

(1) Coverage under a dental plan includes some or all of the following:

  • Routine cleanings

  • Crowns

  • Fillings

  • Emergency tooth replacement

  • Oral surgeries - treatment of root canals and removal of tooth nerves or teeth

  • X-rays

  • Orthodontia

  • Periodontal care

  • Prosthodonic care - Dentures and bridges

(2) Co-pays and deductibles.
The usual co-pay or deductible for each treatment is $25 per person and $50 per family

(3) Maximum coverage.
Plans typically have a cap on yearly coverage of $1,000 per person and $1,500 per family.

(4) Waiting period.
Due to the fact that many people have the need for major dental surgery they try to purchase an individual plan and immediately go to the dentist. Dental insurance companies are aware of this and impose a waiting period for all major dental expenses of up to two years.

(5) Premiums
At this writing the cost for dental insurance is:

Traditional Insurance Plans:           $30 per person and $100 per family PER MONTH

Discount Dental Plans:                   $ 80 per person and $120 per family PER YEAR

What is a Discount Dental Plan? The premium is actually a fee. In return the subscriber receive a discount of about 30% off retail prices. There are no limits, restrictions or paperwork. The plan lists the dentists in
your area that will do the work for the reduced fees in the plan.

(6) Our recommendation.
Given the limited scope of coverage under a traditional dental insurance plan we recommend the discount dental plans. Check with your dentist to see if he or she is a participating dentist in any plans and which ones they recommend.
